「望子成龍、望女成鳳」是華裔的普遍心態，希望下一代能夠入讀加國名牌大學，接受優質高等教育更是不少華裔移民加拿大的主要原因之一，因此催谷子女學業是常見的現象。

然而優異的成績將不再是進卑詩大學（UBC）唯一的門檻，校方除了成績之外，現在也開始考量高中生的個人的資料檔案，這類似美國長春藤大學招收新生的做法。
